DIY Thursday: Sew a Custom Jewelry Display
“Recycle, re-use” and “love the earth” were favorite catch phrases of my childhood of the late ’60’s early 70’s. I was given a sewing needle when I was 5 years old and taught how to make basic stitches. So the other day when I was searching the internet for mannequin style jewelry displays, it hit me. Why don’t I take the concept of one of my collections, hands, and make my own hands for display? A quick peek at just one of my hand groupings. They’re scattered all over my studio and house. After some searching, I realized I wouldn’t be able to purchase a sewing pattern for a hand. I had to jump right in and make one myself. I don’t have any training in pattern making but I had to try. I used regular white printer paper and drew an outline of my own hand. I didn’t measure it while I was drawing but I tried to draw the outline 1/4 inch bigger to allow for seams. The finished pattern on my kitchen table.

before & after: stella’s jewelry rack + sara’s spool holder
What I love about older homes and apartments is that you never know what historical curiosities you may uncover hiding inside. Our 1920s duplex apartment has some provided some fascinating (a small telephone nook in the wall) and disgusting (a rat in the stove) findings over the past few years. Apart from evicting the rat, I haven’t done much with the things that I’ve uncovered in our apartment, which is why I bow to Stella and her quick thinking on this salvaged wood jewelry rack. While rummaging in her closet, she pulled out a shelf to discover that it was made from these old stair stepsC can we please take a second to think about how awesome this staircase must have been, with each floor’s number hand painted on the front of the step? Anyway, Stella wasted no time giving these boards a third purpose in life. She added small hooks that match the wood’s antique feel and mounted the boards together to create a gorgeously rustic storage piece for her accessories.

Another Jewelry Display
Okay, so I might be having a little too much fun finding jewelry storage/display options. But I like this one. You might think it’s weird. You might think it’s creepy. But I think it’s lovely and graceful. And handy! It’s a hand/forearm-shaped jewelry display stand, perfect for your vanity countertop. If you’re a ring fanatic, this is perfect. The long, skinny fingers are just right for slipping on all the rings in your collection. Certain styles of earrings work well, too, as do delicate/lightweight bracelets and necklaces. And the thumb area, which is a little more sturdy, works well for more chunky pieces. I think it’s a little retro a little Audrey Hepburna little whimsical. Here’s the link. Note that the hand display shown on the Amazon listing appears to be glossy/shiny. In person, it’s not shiny at alljust beautifully matte. Hand Jewelry Display (on Amazon

Displaying Your Jewelry To Sell
Displaying Your Jewelry To Sell Effective jewelry displays require wholesale bracelet balance between style and restraint. While there is no perfectly right or perfectly wrong way to show your jewelry, there are a few things to consider. One feature of a good jewelry display is that it reflects the style and personality of the jewelry line and the taste of the targeted customer. Be as creative with your display props, backgrounds, and textures as you are when creating your wholesale necklaces jewelry. For ideas, flip through catalogs that feature women’s fashions and jewelry. The idea is not to copy the way the catalogs display jewelry, but to use their settings as a springboard to a great new display of your own. Of course one can get carried away and put too much into their jewelry display cabinet, which can communicate the wrong message. Picture an entire table filled with bamboo stalks, tiger-print fabric, and driftwood under and behind every piece of jewelry.
